Psychological First Aid

What is it?

PFA is an approach used to reduce stress symptoms and assist recovery following a traumatic incident. PFA is an approach used to reduce stress symptoms and assist recovery following a traumatic incident. It differs from counselling, as rather than unpack you emotionally, it supports keeping everything together to allow you to function by bringing in safety and grounding techniques to help the brain to recover from its heightened state.

Choose a method which works for you…

Telephone

Telephone counselling is carried out via your mobile or landline phone. You’ll need a private space to have the conversation. If using a mobile, ensure a good signal and enough charge on your battery for the length of the session. Headphones are helpful.

In Person

In person PFA is carried out by attending our therapy room in Weymouth. Appointments are made in advance. At present this option is only available on Fridays.

Video

Video counselling is carried out via a secure and encrypted web platform (Doxy). You’ll need a private space to have the conversation. Use a laptop, computer, tablet or phone. Make sure that your microphone and camera are working and you have a good signal. Headphones are helpful.

What to expect

After a traumatic incident

There are a number of physiological responses in the body following something that has triggered our flight/flight response. It can sometimes take a while after the event for our nervous system to calm.

PFA includes psychoeducation along with grounding techniques such as mindfulness and polyvagal exercises.

Testimonials

I didn’t realise going back to work would trigger a fear response, just with customers asking how I was. Thank you, understanding what is happening to me is reassuring and I’ve been able to plan something with manager to support my needs so I can get back to work.

SP, Yorkshire

Every time I felt I was going backwards, you helped change my perspective and I eventually realised that creating safety was key. Its been good to have a social media detox and not watch the negative news. Thanks for your help.

JT, Oxon.
